Introduction

Among the languages that influence English is Arabic. This influence was either through direct borrowing or through indirect borrowing via other languages over which Arabic had considerable influence, particularly Latin and Spanish. A few contemporary studies show that today's English has thousands of words of Arabic origin in all fields of science agriculture, art, astronomy, geography, mathematics, medicine, music, etc..
It is indicated by study of Skeat's Etymological Dictionary of the English Language(1978) that Arabic is the seventh on the list of languages that have contributed to the enrichment of the English vocabulary.

Of course, Arabic contribution not only the English language and culture but also to the major Western languages and cultures.
But I will focus to English only.

Arabic


Arabic is the official language of some 22 countries in North Africa and Middle East. It is , in fact, the native language of about 250 million people since January 1,1974 it has become an official language of United Nations. Being the language of the holy book of Islam _Qur'an_ Arabic is the religious language of all Muslims worldwide: about 1.5 billion people or 25% of the world's population. Almost all the language associated with Islam were (a few still are) writing in Arabic script: PERSIAN, THE TURKIC LANGUAGE IN CENTRAL ASIA, MALAY, KURDISH, URDU, PASHTO ,SWAHILI,HAUSA,MALAYALAM AND TAMIL .Even various Hispanic dialects used the Arabic script from at least the thirteenth century(Mattock,1994)

Genealogically, Arabic is a member of the south-western sub-branch of the so-called 'Semitic' group of the Afro-Asiatic language family. Although its early history is obscure, its earliest written evidence is an inscription found on a tombstone at Nemara in Syrian desert dated to 328 AD, i.e. a few hundred years before the birth of the English language. In the space of few decades, Islam has extended it out of Arabia through North Africa up to Spain. This exceptional rapid spread of Islam together with the Arabic language in such a short period of time is phenomenal, having no equal in the whole history of mankind. "Arabic imposed itself", says Harvey(1994:204), "because of its unique status among Muslims as the language of the divine revelation; it was also the language of culture, commerce and self-advancement".

In the Iberian Peninsula (today's Spain and Portugal), Arabic established its ascendancy very rapidly as it actually did elsewhere. Harvey (op.cit) stresses that " Arabic linguistic influence on all the Romance vernaculars of the Peninsula was considerable" both lexically and morph syntactically ('a large vocabulary of loan words' and 'calques of various sorts'). He goes on saying that the "Arabic influence on the Latin of the translations of the Toledan school was considerable, again both words and linguistic calques".

English

According to Crystal (1987-1992) English is the mother tongue of 18 countries .
The actual English-speaking countries are five: the United states, British, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The number of the native speaker amount to about 400 million people. Besides , it is the official of few other countries, with an additional number of around another 400 million who speak it as a second or foreign language.
More radical statement suggest that the overall total of those who speake English with both high and low level of fluency exceeds one billion people Crystal claims that " English is used as an official or semi-official language in over 60 countries, and has a prominent place in a further 20. it is either dominant or well established in all six countries" it is the language of diplomacy, international, business, science, technology, medicine, air-traffic control, international competitions. "Over two thirds of the world's scientists write in English" The number of foreign students registered in the US alone in 1983 was 337,000.

Genealogically, English is a member of the West Germanic sub-branch of the so-called 'Germanic' group of the Indo- European language family. English linguists divide the history of their language into three major periods (as what our sister Chocolate Manic has said in her topic)

Old English (900-1100)
Middle English (1100-1500)
And, Modern English (1500- today)

In actual fact, however, the real age of English as a distinct language, not as a Germanic dialect, is only a few hundred years.

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته
اسمحوا لي أن اكتب بالغة العربية, وذلك ليتمكن القارئ الكريم من الاستفادة من الموضوع حتى إذا كان غير ملم باللغة الانجليزية. وذلك لرد على بعض التساؤلات التي وردتني ولكثره القراء الذين شرفوا هذا الموضوع
أعضاء ساندروز الحبيب حق لنا أن نفخر بلغتنا الحبيبة (اللغة العربية) وذلك لكونها لغة القران في المقام الأول ثم لكونها لغة العلم منذ قديم الزمن شاء من شاء وأبى من أبى. وليعلم أهل اللغة العربية أن الله تكفل بحفظها وإلا لكنا قد أضعنها نحن فهي للغة قوية بأصلها ضعيفة بأهلها والله المستعان. بعكس اللغة الانجليزية والتي تستمد قوتها من أهلها. كنت قد تكلمت سابقا في هذا الموضوع وهو تأثر اللغة الانجليزية باللغة العربية وأقول هنا لمن فاته الموضوع أن اللغة الانجليزية عبارة عن خليط من اللغات تم دمجها بعد أن كانت لغة ألمانية قديمة لتصبح اللغة الانجليزية الحديثة المعروفة في العصر الحديث وللغة العصر كما يسميها أهلها. وكنت قد ذكرت أن اللغة العربية تأتي في ألمرتبه السابعة بين اللغات المؤثرة في اللغة الانجليزية وذلك بإثرائها بالمفردات . وكنت قد ذكرت أن هذه الكلمات قد يتم استعارتها مباشرة أو بطريقة غير مباشرة أي تجدون العديد من الكلمات تستخدم باللغة الانجليزية تماما كاستخدامنا نحن العرب لها. أو بطريقة غير مباشره أي بتحوير بسيط أو جذري للكلمة وطريقة نطقها أو معناها أيضا وهذا التحوير يحصل مع مرور الزمن وافتقارهم إلى بعض الحروف العربية او بطريقة غير مباشره أي ليست من العربية مباشرتا وإنما من للغة أخرا قد استعارت ألكلمه من العربية سابقا. كما سترون في الأمثلة. ولا يفوتني هنا أن أخبركم عن السياسة الغربية في تشويه اللغة العربية ونكران الجميل لهذه اللغة التي أثرت قواميسهم ومعاجمهم.
لو تأملنا قليلا في الكلمات الدارجة هذه الأيام لوجدنا أن كل الكلمات التي يعترفون بأنها عربية الأصل هي كلمات هدامة مثل ( إرهاب, سلاح, قاعدة, جهاد,حربة.........
أو مثل ( حشيش, كحول,......... وغيرها فالقائمة طويلة
أما أغلب الكلمات الأخرى وهي كثير في جميع التخصصات والعلوم والمعارف فقد طمست وحولت واستحدثت كلمات جديدة لنسيان الكلمات العربية الأصل ليمحوا وصمت العار ولينكروا أنهم بدءوا من حيث أنتها علماء المسلمين . وأغرب كلمة مرت علي هي كلمة Ulalume وهي تعني العلوم طبعا كلمة عربيه بحته استحدثوا كلمه جديدة وهي الكلمة الشائعة sciences
ولم أجدها إلا في الأدب الأمريكي وهي قصيدة لكاتب وشاعر معروف اسمه ((Edgar Allan Poe1847
وقد تساءلت لماذا ينسبون تلك الكلمات؟ فوجدت أنها سياستهم في تشويه صورة العرب ولغتهم وأفكارهم وأننا منبع الفساد ولإرهاب هذا ما يريدون إثباته للكل. وهناك سبب أخر وهو أن يكونوا على اطلاع وفهم للغتنا, ولخوفهم كما وصفهم الله في محكم التنزيل.

الآن هذه بعض الكلمات الانجليزية المستعارة بطريقة مباشرة من اللغة العربية ولو أنها كثير – حوالي 7800 كلمة مدرجه في اللغة الانجليزية كما ورد في بحث سنة 1996—ولكن هذه أمثله وليست للحصر

وصحيح هنالك الكثير من الكلمات لم يعودوا يستخدمونها لوجود البديل والكثير ايضاُ سيتم التخلص منها اذا استمروا على سياستهم.
