What do you know about English exams???
So many English Exams are provided by a testing bodies in U.K or U.S.A, and held in centers available in outside countries such as the British Council, the main aim of those exams is to test the some language abilities in the students of English as a Foriegn Language (EFL)
I will talk about few exams are provided by Cambrige Univesity in U.K and held in the British council, they are important since they measure the language skills and the ability of studying subjects in English language.
KET - Key English Test
This is an examination based on the Council of Europe’s Waystage 1990 Specification. It was introduced in 1994. It provides an initial learning objective for adolescents and adults, enabling learners to meet their basic communication needs in English, and is the first step on the ladder of the five level Cambridge Main Suite examinations.
PET - Preliminary English Test
This is an examination introduced in 1981, based on the Council of Europe’s Threshold Specification, which tests the language skills needed to survive in social and work situations in an English-speaking environment. It was recently revised to bring it into line with Threshold 1990.
FCE - First Certificate in English
This is an examination at an intermediate level, requiring competence in all the language skills. It is widely recognised in commerce and industry, and by educational institutions in Britain and overseas as proof of language ability at an intermediate level. An extensively revised version was introduced in December 1996.
CAE - Certificate in Advanced English
This is an examination at an advanced level which was introduced in 1991 and is suitable for people who require English for professional or study purposes. There is an emphasis on real-world tasks. It is also recognised by the majority of British universities as fulfilling English Language entrance requirements.
CPE - Certificate of Proficiency in English
This is an examination at an advanced level, which is recognised as fulfilling English language requirements by British universities and for business and academic purposes overseas
BEC - Business English Certificates
The Business English Certificates are a suite of three examinations - BEC Preliminary, BEC Vantage, BEC Higher - designed to test English language ability used in the context of business. They are suitable for adults (aged 16 and over) who are either preparing for a career in business or already in work.
IELTS - International English Language Testing System
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) superseded the English Language Testing System (ELTS) in 1990. The test is jointly assessed and run by UCLES, the British Council and IELTS Australia: IDP Education Australia. A revised version of IELTS was introduced in 1995.
IELTS is recognised as an entrance requirement by British, Australian, New Zealand and Canadian universities and for secondary, vocational and training programmes.
