The colonial school system emerged when Mali was governed as part of the entire French Sudan. At that time there was no national school system peculiar to each member state ; rather there was a uniform system encompassing the wholly French colony of the Sudan. Thus, when the first school was established in Kayes, the ancient capital of the French Sudan, it was meant to serve the entire territory and not just the area where the school was located.
The colonial school at Kayes, established in 1886 was known as the
"School of Hostages" because the pupils were children of the traditional chiefs.

They had been taken from their father and held as hostages to prevent them from instigating rebellions against the colonial authority. While in school the pupils were taught to respect and appreciate French Ideals and French culture and, of course to speak French .
In 1910 the name of the school was changed to " the school for the "Sons of chiefs and Interpreters".
With the change of name the school assumed the special responsibility of producing from among the children of the traditional chiefs a nucleus of native aristocracy who would eventually propagate the French way of life throughout the country .
The children were taught to despise their culture, to be ashamed of their language and to see French, instead as the language of light, the symbol of virtue and civilization.
All the colonial schools established thereafter followed the guidelines of the Kayes school .
