Acadiana or Cajun Country is that area in southwest Louisiana that was settled by the Acadians after being exiled from Acadia (Canada) in the mid 1750's. As the Acadiana settled along the bayous and prairies they merged with other nationalities and the Cajun People evolved.

There are 64 Parishes in the State of Louisiana and Louisiana is the only state to designated their districts as Parishes instead of Counties.

In 1969, the State of Louisiana officially recognized the 22 Parishes listed below as "Acadiana", the Cajun Homeland of Lousiana, with House Resolution No. 494. Please note that New Orleans is not included

The term "Acadiana" which has come to signify all that is great about South Louisiana was stumbled on by accident in 1963 when KATC, TV-3 of Lafayette, owned by the Acadian Television Corporation received an invoice with a typographical error. Someone had mistakenly added the letter "a" to the end of Acadian, forming "Acadiana".

The then station manager of KATC, Bill Patton, had been looking for a catchy term to identify the area. When he noted the error, he felt it was just what they had been looking for as it combined the two geographical areas important to Cajun Culture, Acadie, the area of Canada from where the French settlers were exiled and Louisiana.
