The possession of language, perhaps more than any other attributes, distinguishes humans from animals . But what does it mean to have “known” a language??
تملك اللغة ، ربما اكثر من أي صفة أخرى ، تميز الإنسان عن الحيوان. ولكن ماذا يعني أن " نعرف " اللغة ؟

When you know a language .you can speak and be understood by others who know that language. This means you have the capacity to produce sounds that signify certain meanings and to understand or interpret the sounds produced by others. Deaf persons produce and understand sign language just as hearing persons produce and understand spoken language.
عندما نعرف اللغة فانه بإمكاننا التحدث وبإمكان الآخرين ممن يعرفون لغتنا فهمنا....هذا يعني أننا نملك القدرة والقابلية لإصدار الأصوات التي تدل على معان خاصة وتمكننا من فهم وتفسير الأصوات التي يصدرها الآخرون....
الصم بإمكانهم إصدار وفهم لغة الإشارة تماما كما نفعل عندما نتحدث اللغة.

Yet, the ability to carry out the simplest conversation requires profound knowledge that most speakers are unaware of.
ورغم ذلك القدرة على عمل محادثة تتطلب معرفة عميقة الأمر الذي يجهله اكثر المتحدثين بهذه اللغة.
