Jeepers Creepers 2
The sequel to the 2001's horror success 'Jeepers Creepers' has hit the Egyptian screen last week, but the audience found the story hard to follow because the first film, which became an instant worldwide cult classic, never made it to the Egyptian cinemas nor on video cassette and very few viewers have experienced it in pay-per-view satellite channels.
To give the readers an idea about what 'Jeepers Creepers 2' is all about, I will try to recap the story of the first film. It opened with two teens, Patricia (Gina Philips) and Darius (Justin Long) who, while driving to Florida, were being chased by a mutated monster, known to the locals by the name of the Creeper.
The brother and the sister later spotted the giant "half man-half bat" monster throwing away what looked like human bodies in an old church basement. When they decided to investigate, they both discovered that the monster's hideaway is a gruesome cemetery. The movie closed with a twisted surprise-ending with Darius sacrificing himself for his sister and the monster getting away with the killings.
Victor Salva, the writer and director of the first film, returns in 'Jeepers Creepers 2'. The sequel is set few days after the story of the first part, and again it opens on the road with a school bus carrying a team of young basketball players with their coach, and beautiful cheerleaders. But their bad luck leads them to the Creeper who is set to have them for dinner! Meanwhile, local farmer Jack (Ray Wise) is set to kill the flesh-eating monster to retaliate his own son.
Though the characters of 'Jeepers Creepers 2' are numerous and colorful, they are not as interesting as those of Darius and Patricia, who were the driving force behind the success of the first film.
The movie only worked at scaring the viewers sporadically with the unexpected sudden attacks of the Creeper. The sequel's real achievement goes to the technical aspect of the outstanding scary make-up of the Creeper, making use of a greater budget ($25M compared to $10M for the first 'Jeepers Creepers').
Locally, Jeepers Creepers scored around 100,000 Egyptian Pounds, exceeding the far better latest Nicolas Cage release 'Matchstick Men', a significant indication to the Egyptian viewers' genre preference.
