WORLD CUP COVERAGE SCRAMBLED
It looks as if both live coverage and highlights of the upcoming World Cup will be restricted to pay-TV. In the wake of the insolvency proceedings against KirchMedia, three German free TV broadcasters, SAT1, ARD and ZDF,
stepped in and pledged to broadcast the matches for free. But SAT1 has now said all its football coverage will have to be encrypted and therefore only available to those with pay-TV decoders. SAT1 had landed the rights to the
games for Germany, but it is being forced to put the football on pay-TV, because it is a digital satellite broadcaster and the signal would have spilled over to other countries where it is not licensed to show the matches for free. As a result its daily two-hour report from the World Cup in Asia, which will be available in digital and cable, will have to be encoded. Heiko Zysk, who runs the media politics and regulation division at SAT1, said: "During the football show Ran the digital signal of SAT.1 Germany will be televised via satellite encoded in Betacrypt". Betacrypt is the coding system used by the KirchMedia subsidiary Premiere World, meaning that only people with a valid Premiere World card can watch the programme.
Theoretically it is possible in Germany to receive SAT1 in analogue form, but most German households get their TV via digital cable or common satellite, and will therefore have to buy such decoders and cards - or opt for a month without football.
