What's Special About It?
Both Toyota and Subaru are showing open-top roadster concepts that are powered by hybrid technology. Perhaps a sports car is the only way to get people interested in hybrid technology or perhaps it's just a way to justify building a sports car in the first place; either way, the CS&S is an interesting car. Firstly, the seats fold forward to cover the dash and protect it from the elements or whatever else is lurking out there, and secondly the design of that interior is an interesting mix of new and old.
With a horseshoe-shaped theme, the dash area looks like it was inspired by an old Corvette. The round headlights have a classic but post-modern look and the rear head farings look like rocket-age design at its best. Hey, Lexus! Wouldn't a production car using many of these design cues make a perfect replacement for the current and somewhat generic-looking SC 430? Just a thought.
The navigation, audio and climate control functions are accessed via a "space touch" screen that uses a small camera to capture your hand position. But given the classically simple nature of the design, wouldn't simple mechanical controls be better? Also, the front seats can be moved forward to reveal a 2+2 seating configuration, but it looks pretty tight back there — maybe just enough room to take Fido to the park.
Why Should You Care?
This is one of the more inspired designs Toyota has come up with in years. If this is the look of its next generation of sporty cars, then that's just fine by us. — Brian Moody
