Very informal words, phrases commonly used in speech especially between people from the same social or group or who work together not considered suitable for formal context….

Below some of them from my note book I hope you do like them

Out of luck
Unable to get what you want, having no chance to succeed
e.g If you are looking for easy money at a casino, you’re out of luck

All ears
Listening carefully
e.g I was all ears as Stev told me his exciting story

Pipe down
To stop talking, to lower the volume, frequently used as a command meaning”Be at quite”
e.g Pipe down man is talking on the phone

People person
Someone who likes being with other people and who is good at working with people
e.g Holy is not a people person luckily her job doesn’t require her to spend a lot of time with clients.


Nailed
To find or catch someone doing something wrong
e.g Jimmy’s father nailed him smoking cigarettes.

Break the ice
To overcome the initial awkwardness of a new situation, particulary among people who don’t know each other very well

Chick
A young woman, particulary an attractive young woman
e.g Jane is a cool chick

Cup of tea
Something you don’t like to do
e.g Some people love football but it’s not my cup of tea I prefer bowling

Yawner
Something that is boring and completely uninteresting
e.g The film was a real yawner, I feel asleep after the first 20 minutes.

Jump ship
To leave your Jop, or to move from one situation to another
e.g When the company announced that it was losing money, many of it’s employees jumped the ship.
